The Rancho Alamitos Alumni Association has presented its
inaugural John Callard Memorial Scholarship to Michael Frank, a
2010 Rancho Alamitos High School graduate.
Callard was a longtime staff member at
the high school, located in Garden Grove, who joined its faculty
in its opening year of 1956 as a mathematics teacher and “B”
football coach. He spent his career at Rancho over the next 33
years, serving as varsity football head coach from 1965 to 1976,
during which time the Vaqueros won seven Garden Grove League
championships. Growing up in Long Beach, Callard was a football
star at historic Poly High School, and was named by the Long
Beach Press-Telegram in 2009 as one of the top players for the
decade of the 1940s at that celebrated institution. He went on
to star at Long Beach City College where he was a member of the
1950 Junior Rose Bowl national championship team (and earned the
MVP award for that game). He was inducted into the LBCC Hall of
Champions last year.
Callard passed away in 2008. The
Alumni Association established the scholarship in his name this
year to honor the memory of a beloved
teacher and respected coach. It is given to a graduating
senior varsity athlete from Rancho Alamitos who is pursuing both
academics and athletics at a community college.
Frank, who played quarterback on the Vaquero football team, set
14 school records in the sport. A
pocket passer heading up the team’s no-huddle offense, he
threw for 2,813 yards and 33 touchdowns last season. His honors
included: 2007 Rancho Varsity Rookie of the Year; 2008 Rancho
Varsity Offensive MVP; 2009 Garden Grove League Offensive MVP
and 1st
Team All League;
and
quarterback for the North squad in the Orange County North South
All Star game. (In that game, played on July 16, Frank ended up
with 132 passing yards, and led the North on a 97-yard scoring
drive.)
Frank
also received honors for basketball and baseball. He will be
attending Golden West Community College in Huntington Beach, CA.
